The core method has only one sentence: don't start from 'what parameters are on the screen', start from 'what exactly the project needs', and fill in each item in reverse. 2、 ① Size: Recommended by viewing distance, not necessarily the larger the better

3、 Resolution and PPI: As long as they are sufficient, don't chase after parameter arms races
E Ink does not compete in the 2K/4K arms race of mobile screens. Its pixel density has a practical sweet spot area, and the selection is based on 'clear and readable content at this size'. The criteria for judgment are simple - whether the content is mainly in large font titles, prices, or small font text/tables.
- Large font content (price, status, house number text): Low resolution is also available, don't spend too much money on pixels.
- Small font text/tables/PDF documents: Higher PPI is required, commonly seen in medium densities such as 7.5-inch 800 × 480 to cover office doorplates, and 13.3-inch 1600 × 1200 to better present A4 documents.
- Color: The effective resolution of color e-papers is usually lower than that of black and white of the same size (due to the color filter structure). When selecting a color version, simply follow the 'color hierarchy is sufficient' principle, and there is no need to pursue the same level of delicacy as LCD.
Numerical reference: For example, the 8.14-inch Spectra 3100 four-color screen is 1024 × 576/144ppi (according to E Ink's official accessory page), and the 13.3-inch Kaleido 3-color screen is 1600 × 1200, with a black and white side of 300ppi (according to E Ink's official product page). Getting these public specifications makes it easier for you to compare PPI horizontally, rather than just looking at one resolution number.
4、 ③ Black and White vs Color: Determine by 'Emphasizing Color or Not'
4.1 Black-White vs Color/Three-Color
The color range of E Ink is divided into three levels, not collectively referred to as' color screen '
- Black/White (Level 16 Gray): The content only requires the most commonly used text and icons, with low cost, high contrast, and friendly lifespan.
- Tri color/four-color (black/white/red, or yellow): It is very practical to use red/yellow as an emphasis ('already occupied' promotion '), which is a commonly used price tag and house number.
- Full color (Kaleido/Spectra series): Suitable for scenes that require color differentiation (maps, charts, logos), but the color saturation cannot be equivalent to LCD/OLED, and the effective resolution and refresh rate need to meet expectations.
Selection mnemonic: Do you want to 'see a certain color at a glance'? Emphasize the use of three/four colors; Only consider full-color when enriching the color of the image; As long as the text is described, black and white are actually more concise and stable.
5、 ④ Interface: Can it be connected to your main control/system
For system integrators, interfaces are the hard threshold that determines whether they can connect to existing systems. The common interfaces for the E Ink module are SPI (most common, with few pins), I2C (multi small screen/sensor scenarios), TTL parallel (high-speed/large-sized), and some parallel ports. When purchasing, clearly state who your controller is and what the existing protocol is, and have the supplier confirm the interface and driver support, which is more stable than setting the interface first and then finding the screen.
- SPI: Shipped the most, supported by most microcontrollers/development boards/gateways, suitable for most commercial screens.
- I2C: The simplest wiring, mostly used for small-sized and low data volume scenarios.
- Parallel port/TTL: Used for large sizes or when fast complete writing is required, with slightly higher driver complexity.
- Whole machine/networked version: If you don't want to write the driver yourself, choose a whole machine solution with network (BLE/Wi Fi/gateway) and API, and hand over the 'interface' issue to the manufacturer for pre integration.

The bistable power-saving feature of E Ink is very attractive, but the boundary of the working temperature range needs to be clarified first. The liquid inside microcapsules becomes viscous at low temperatures, and the refresh time slows down significantly - industry data shows that the refresh time can be extended from about 2 seconds at low temperatures to 5 seconds or even longer. - Cold storage/outdoor/washing and flushing area: industrial grade wide temperature + appropriate IP protection (such as IP65 whole machine), and confirm with the supplier the low-temperature refreshing and condensation solution.

7、 ⑥ Installation method: The shell and mechanical design should be determined together
Installation is not a last thought - it determines the overall shape of the machine along with power supply, replacement capability, and load-bearing capacity. The common installation methods are as follows, choose according to the site conditions.
- Wall mounted/embedded: suitable for doorplates and information walls; Wall embedding should consider slotting and reserving holes, which have high renovation costs and are suitable for new or ongoing construction.
- Table stand/desktop stand: suitable for tabletop cards, gifts, and welcome guests, easy to move, and low renovation cost.
- Double sided display: Suitable for workstation signs that intersect in corridors and are visible on both sides. The structure of the double-sided screen needs to be confirmed.
- Lifting/Vertical: Suitable for lobbies and guide columns, requiring verification of structure and power supply wiring
When selecting, ask the supplier to provide mechanical drawings of the shell/bracket and installation hole positions together to avoid discovering that the entire machine cannot be installed only when it arrives on site.
8、 ⑦ Update frequency + full parameter checklist
The final decision regarding driver and waveform selection is how often to refresh the content. E Ink is designed based on refresh rate, with an expected 'typical refresh rate/lifespan' (often mentioned as millions of refresh rates for multiple screens, according to some publicly available specifications), and the higher the frequency, the closer it is to LCD - if you find content changing every second, then you should not choose E Ink. Writing the update frequency into the requirements will make the driver selection more accurate.
